After years of counseling and therapy we were told by our case manager that the best option for my cousin was jail? Providing three meals a day and an unyielding structure. We cannot continue to care for him ourselves but he doesn’t deserve prison. Are there no homes that take mentally retarded adults, particularly an emotionally explosive sometimes violent one?
I know there has to be a place for him somewhere but we’ve been looking for several years now and have found nothing. The violence is usually the issue but it is something that can’t be changed. Can anyone recommend a compassionate place? We had some bad experiences when he was a child so he has been pulled out of several. The problem is, now that he is an adult most of the places that would suit his needs won’t accept him. He is really just a little boy inside, no older than 6 or 7. He has just had the years of a 20 year old.
I suppose I should have been more specific but thank you for the responses. I understand the options available, I am having trouble finding one. Does anyone know of a good place? Has anyone ever placed a family member in a group home? Location isn’t the issue so much as the reputation of the home itself.
What are the options for mentally retarded adult care after 18?

I don’t know what’s available close to where you live; but I don’t think you were given good advice. Jail is not appropriate housing for an adult with mental retardation. Do you have a state hospital anywhere close by?
